Why did my shoulder dislocate?
The shoulder is a ball and socket joint but the socket is a flat small vertical wall. It is reliant on the ligaments and tendons to hold the ball on the flat socket. When you dislocate your shoulder you often tear the ligaments. This makes you at risk of dislocating the shoulder again or subluxing the shoulder where it partially dislocates.
Do I need surgery after my first dislocation?
Young athletic people are at a high risk of further dislocations or a sensation of apprehension like the shoulder might dislocate again. This can prevent return to sport. These patients shoulder consider surgery. Most people, including elite athletes, will return to the same level of sport after surgery.
It is important to see a shoulder surgeon after your first dislocation so you can discuss the best option for you.

Will I need any tests?
Most people need X-rays after a first dislocation and if you are considering surgery an MRI scan can be useful. The MRI scan is usually an MRI arthrogram which needs an injection of contrast into the shoulder before the scan to show any small tears which can otherwise be missed.
Can shoulder exercises help?
Shoudler exercises with a physiotherapist can be helpful. However, if you are experiencing multiple dislocations or subluxations it is important to have a discussion with a surgeon to make sure you aren't damaging the joint further.
What does surgery involve?
The shoulder can usually be stabilised with keyhole surgery. You should expect to return to driving at six weeks and full contact sport at three months.
When can I return to normal activities?
After a shoulder stabilisation for the first four weeks any movements will be closely supervised by a physiotherapist to ensure you dan't damage the repair. After four weeks you can gradually increase activities to return to full sport and work at three months.

The risk of ongoing instability for an 18 year old man after a single dislocation is as high as 78%.
